How Heavy Periods Could Be Draining More Than Just Your Energy This Summer

Summer in Florida is already demanding on the body. Between the heat, the humidity, and the packed schedules of July and August, it’s easy to chalk up fatigue, dizziness, or that run-down feeling to the season itself. But if you’re also dealing with heavy periods, your symptoms may be telling you something more important and something very treatable.

What Counts as a Heavy Period?

Heavy menstrual bleeding, medically known as menorrhagia, is defined as soaking through a pad or tampon every hour for several hours, passing clots larger than a quarter, or bleeding for more than seven days. Many women have lived with heavy periods for so long that they’ve come to think of it as simply the way their body works.

It’s not. Heavy periods are not a normal baseline: they’re a symptom. And during summer, when heat, physical activity, and dehydration are already stressing your system, the effects of heavy bleeding become harder to ignore and harder to compensate for.

The Hidden Toll: Iron-Deficiency Anemia

One of the most significant and underrecognized consequences of heavy periods is iron-deficiency anemia. When you lose more blood than your body can efficiently replace, your iron stores drop. Iron is essential for producing hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to your tissues. When hemoglobin falls, every cell in your body gets less oxygen than it needs.

In the summer heat, anemia hits differently. Symptoms that might otherwise seem mild become much more pronounced:

  • Fatigue and weakness that doesn’t improve with rest
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when standing up quickly
  • Shortness of breath during activities that didn’t used to leave you winded
  • Heart palpitations
  • Difficulty concentrating or a persistent mental fog
  • Pale skin and cold hands and feet: even in 90-degree weather

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth asking whether your periods might be behind it.

Summer Activities Shouldn’t Come With Anxiety

Beyond the physical effects, heavy periods affect life in ways that rarely get talked about openly. Pool days, beach trips, long car rides, travel plans; all of it gets filtered through the question: “What if my period is heavy that week?”

Women with heavy periods are more likely to cancel plans, avoid physical activity, and limit themselves socially during their cycle. In the summer, when August often brings back-to-school events, family gatherings, and vacations, this can mean missing out on moments that matter.

You shouldn’t have to plan your summer around your period.

What Causes Heavy Periods?

Heavy menstrual bleeding has several possible underlying causes, and identifying the right one is what guides treatment. Common contributors include:

  • Uterine fibroids or polyps: Benign growths that can increase the volume or duration of bleeding
  • Hormonal imbalance: Particularly common during perimenopause, when estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate
  • Adenomyosis: A condition where the uterine lining tissue grows into the uterine wall
  • Thyroid disorders or clotting conditions: Systemic issues that affect how the body manages blood
  • IUD type: Non-hormonal copper IUDs can worsen heavy periods in some women

A thorough evaluation, including a pelvic ultrasound and sometimes bloodwork, helps pinpoint what’s driving your symptoms.

Effective Treatments Are Available Right Here in Ocala

The good news is that heavy periods are one of the most treatable gynecological concerns. Dr. DelCharco offers several options depending on your situation:

  • NovaSure® Endometrial Ablation: A one-time, five-minute in-office procedure that removes the uterine lining. Over 90% of women see dramatic reduction or complete elimination of heavy periods. • Hormonal management: Birth control options including hormonal IUDs, pills, or other methods can significantly lighten periods for women who prefer or require a non-surgical approach.
  • Hormone replacement therapy: For women in perimenopause whose heavy bleeding is tied to hormonal changes, HRT can stabilize hormone levels and reduce bleeding.
  • Hysterectomy: For patients who haven’t responded to other treatments or who have significant structural causes, a hysterectomy offers a permanent solution.

The office was pleasant and efficient. The previsit ultrasound was not as unpleasant as expected. Dr DelCharco is extremely nice and has a very calming demeanor.
