Menopause is a natural phase in every woman’s life—but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. The transition can bring physical and emotional changes that impact everything from sleep and mood to relationships and overall well-being. At DelCharco M.D. OB/GYN in Ocala, FL, we help women navigate perimenopause and menopause with the care, support, and treatment options they need to feel their best.
What Is Perimenopause?
Perimenopause is the time leading up to menopause when the ovaries gradually start producing less estrogen. It typically begins in your 40s (sometimes earlier) and can last anywhere from a few months to several years. You’re still having menstrual periods, but they may become irregular.
Common symptoms of perimenopause include:
- Irregular periods (shorter or longer cycles)
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Mood swings or irritability
- Sleep disturbances
- Vaginal dryness
- Changes in libido
- Difficulty concentrating (“brain fog”)
What Is Menopause?
Menopause is officially diagnosed when you haven’t had a period for 12 consecutive months. For most women, this occurs around age 51. At this point, the ovaries have stopped releasing eggs and estrogen levels are significantly lower.
Postmenopausal symptoms may include:
- Continued hot flashes
- Thinning vaginal walls
- Increased risk of osteoporosis and heart disease
- Urinary changes or incontinence
- Weight gain or shifts in fat distribution
- Emotional changes such as anxiety or depression
Treatments and Support Options
The good news? You don’t have to suffer through symptoms alone. There are a variety of treatment options to help ease the transition and improve quality of life.
- Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT):
One of the most effective treatments for hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness. It replaces declining estrogen (and progesterone) with bioidentical or synthetic hormones. - Non-Hormonal Medications:
These may include antidepressants for mood changes or hot flashes, or medications for sleep support and bone health. - Lifestyle Adjustments:
- Staying physically active and eating a balanced diet
- Prioritizing sleep and stress management
- Avoiding hot flash triggers like alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods
- Vaginal Estrogen Treatments:
Available as creams, tablets, or rings, these help relieve vaginal dryness and discomfort during intimacy. - Natural Supplements and Therapies:
Some women find relief through soy, black cohosh, or acupuncture—but always check with your doctor before trying herbal remedies.
